The NYSE is the world's largest marketplace for buying and selling stocks. It's also one of the oldest in the world, founded in May 1792! Located in lower Manhattan, and the scene of that fun moment in the 1983 movie starring Eddie Murphy, Trading Places, the New York Stock Exchange has been a central spot for companies aiming to raise money, and for investors trying to make a dollar out of 15¢.
Here's a good article from the Motley Fool detailing more about the New York Stock Exchange (but ignore their sales pitch for the "Ultimate Portfolio" at the end. The rest of the info is good).
Many of the companies that make up the S&P 500 are traded on the NYSE, like Bank of America (ticker symbol BAC) Goldman Sachs (ticker GS) and JP Morgan Chase (ticker JPM).
Have you ever thought about visiting the New York Stock Exchange in the Financial District (FiDi for short)? I haven't been inside, but I hope to experience it someday! How about you? Let me know in the comments, and as always, thanks for reading this!
