In addition to August as Black Business month, it's also a month where Americans are encouraged to put some attention on 'estate planning.' Do you have a will? Is it updated? Many people don’t have a will, but this is a mistake—in case of the unthinkable—an unexpected, early or accidental death, on top of the loss, the family would have to also deal with whatever the court decides to do with their loved one’s property.
The kindest thing to do for our families is to put our intentions on paper, have neutral witnesses sign for it and then make sure that document is safe.
We have written before about FreeWill.com and the very quick and easy process to create a legal will there in about 20 mins, and that is a good option.
Another option is to create what they call a Holographic will—handwritten in your own handwriting, and signed.
How ever you do it, here are the basic steps, according to a quick google search:
Key Steps to Make a Will
State your details: Write your full legal name and where you live. Say that this document is your final will.
Choose an executor: Pick a trusted person to carry out your plan.
List your gifts: Name who will get your money, items, or property.
Add guardians: Name a person to care for young children or pets.
Sign and witness: Sign the paper with two adult witnesses watching. Check your local laws to see if you need a notary. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
It doesn’t have to be perfect, but, getting it done, especially for those who have children, will be a relief.
August can be a slower month for many, so it an ideal time, and worth it to take the time to do this for your peace of mind.
And for your family--Keep the peace. Lock in the plan.
Have you written your will? How did you get yourself to do it? And if you haven’t yet, or it isn’t updated, what might be standing in your way? Let us know in the comments! And as always, thanks for reading this.
