Happy Black History/Black Futures Month!

I love BHM, and not just because it's my birthday month. With the Superbowl around the corner, I want to celebrate the way that Black excellence transformed the halftime show from boring to BAD (Michael Jackson-style) in the early '90s.

Keenan Ivory Wayans and his family changed the Superbowl forever

Up until 1992, the halftime slot at the Superbowl was nothing to write home about. But that year, a competing network aired a special designed by the Wayans brothers and their groundbreaking 'In Living Color' variety show, and over 20 million viewers left the channel to watch the competing show. The NFL realized that they needed to fix the leak. That next year, 1993, they chose MJ to perform, and it has been one incredible show after another since then.

AND I was today years old when I learned that Jay Z, with his company Roc Nation, has been choosing Superbowl acts since 2019! From last year's stunning performance by Kendrick Lamar, to this year, choosing Spanish-speaker Bad Bunny to headline, when ICE is targeting and terrorizing immigrant and US-born citizens alike, well, these are beautiful acts of defiance and artistry.
