In stock market investing, an "Index" is a way to measure the strength of the market. In this post I wrote about the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is a popular index. And I have written a lot about the Standard and Poor's 500, usually known as the S&P500, which tracks the 500 largest publicly-traded US companies. That's another index, and there are many more, all used to measure and assess how well the stock market is doing.
