What is an Index?

In stock market investing, an "Index" is a way to measure the strength of the market. In this post I wrote about the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is a popular index. And I have written a lot about the Standard and Poor's 500, usually known as the S&P500, which tracks the 500 largest publicly-traded US companies. That's another index, and there are many more, all used to measure and assess how well the stock market is doing.

Here at the MGB Investing Starter Kit, step 1 is to follow the index the S&P 500--How has that been going for you?
