Today's Kwanzaa principle is Ujamaa-- 'extended family,' 'community' or 'brotherhood/sisterhood' in Kiswahili, the main language of East Africa. Ujamaa was a principle adopted by Tanzania after independence from colonialism, back in 1966.
In the week-long celebration of Kwanzaa, which started on Monday, the word has come to mean Collective Economics--buying Black, supporting Black Business, circulating wealth in the Black community. To celebrate, we can light a candle and think about ways to practice Ujamaa.
