Did you know that Dr MLK Jr wrote a brilliant book that parallels some of the backlash we are seeing today after the Black Lives Matter protests of the summer of 2020?
He saw that "the line of progress is never straight." Despite setbacks after the monumental signing of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, the country was in a time of revolution and change was afoot.
Economics were an important part of his vision for the future. A living wage, a guaranteed income for all, was a wish he had for America. He wrote:
A host of positive psychological changes inevitably will result from widespread economic security. The dignity of the individual will flourish when the decisions concerning his life are in his hands, when he has the assurance that his income is stable and certain, and when he knows that he has the means to seek self-improvement.
From Where Do We Go From Here by Dr Martin Luther King Jr
It's certain that Dr. King would encourage any means of economic freedom, and when we celebrate his birth on Monday, let's take time to read or listen to his words, and appreciate his beautiful vision for a world, because as he wrote, 'all life is interrelated. The agony of the poor impoverishes the rich. The betterment of the poor enriches the rich. We are inevitably our brother's keeper because we are our brother's brother. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly."
Happy Birthday, Dr King.
